Background of the Study

The logistics industry is central to economic growth, serving as a backbone for trade and commerce. However, the sector faces challenges such as high operational costs, inefficiencies, and human error. To address these issues, logistics firms are increasingly turning to IT automation as a solution (Garba & Yusuf, 2023). IT automation involves the use of technology to execute repetitive tasks and streamline operations, thereby reducing costs and enhancing efficiency.

Automation technologies such as robotic process automation (RPA), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning are being deployed to optimize supply chains, manage inventories, and ensure real-time tracking of goods. In Sokoto State, where the logistics sector is rapidly growing, the adoption of IT automation is seen as a means to improve operational efficiency and reduce the cost burden associated with manual processes (Adebayo & Ibrahim, 2024).

Despite the potential benefits, the transition to automation is not without challenges. Initial setup costs, staff training, and resistance to change are among the factors that hinder widespread adoption. Furthermore, there is limited empirical research that quantifies the cost-saving effects of IT automation in logistics firms within the specific context of Sokoto State.

Statement of the Problem

Logistics firms in Sokoto State face increasing pressure to reduce operational costs while maintaining service quality. Manual processes and outdated systems contribute to inefficiencies, errors, and high overhead costs. IT automation offers a promising solution, but its implementation requires significant investment, and the tangible cost-saving benefits are not always clear (Danladi & Abdullahi, 2023).

While some firms have reported success with IT automation, others remain hesitant due to the perceived risks and challenges. The lack of region-specific studies on the cost-reduction impact of IT automation further complicates decision-making for logistics firms in Sokoto State. This study aims to address this gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of how IT automation affects cost reduction.

Objectives of the Study

1. To analyze the impact of IT automation on cost reduction in logistics firms in Sokoto State.

2. To identify the specific areas within logistics operations where IT automation has the most significant cost-saving effects.

3. To assess the challenges and barriers to adopting IT automation in logistics firms in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

1. What is the impact of IT automation on cost reduction in logistics firms in Sokoto State?

2. Which operational areas benefit the most from IT automation in terms of cost savings?

3. What are the challenges and barriers to implementing IT automation in logistics firms?

Research Hypotheses

1. IT automation does not have a significant impact on cost reduction in logistics firms in Sokoto State.

2. The cost-saving benefits of IT automation vary significantly across different operational areas.

3. Challenges and barriers significantly affect the adoption of IT automation in logistics firms in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on logistics firms in Sokoto State, examining their use of IT automation to reduce costs. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and financial records. Limitations may include reluctance from firms to disclose financial data and variations in the level of IT automation among firms.

Definitions of Terms

• IT Automation: The use of technology to perform repetitive tasks without human intervention.

• Cost Reduction: The process of lowering expenses to improve profitability.
